Ensure you have a good sport’s bra – in Up and Running you will find bras ideal for running.
START SLOW – Start with a good warm up of 5 – 10 minute walk and a stretch. Then start by interspersing walking and running. Try 3 minutes of walking to 30 seconds to 1 minute of slow controlled jogging.
LISTEN TO YOUR BODY – The most important thing is to listen to your body and not to try to do too much too soon. After a few weeks or walk / jogs then try to increase the jogging for a few minutes at a time.
BREATHING – Most people struggle with the breathing techniques for running. You should be able to talk while you are running.
Allow air throughyour mouth and nose when you’re running to take as much oxygen as possible to the working muscles.
Breathfrom your diaphragm / stomach, not from your chest – that’s too shallow, this will help to prevent stitches in your side.
Exhale fully through your mouth to remove unwanted carbon dioxide and to help you inhale more deeply.
If you are feeling unwell or not able to continue, then stop. Take it to a walk and slowly start again.
Relax and enjoy it.
