Meet Mareike!

If you attend a Fitball class or Parkfit you may be lucky enough to have Mareike as your instructor. Mareike joined our team earlier this year, and consistently has people returning to her classes. The class is differentiated to meet the needs of the people and everyone is given a good workout. Mareike and I work closely together to discuss the content of the sessions and to ensure progression is maintained. Here are a few words from Mareike,

I’d like to tell you a bit more about myself.

I grew up in Southern Germany and came to England about seven years ago to study Business
Management with Sports & Exercise Science at the University of Gloucestershire. After uni, I worked
for a few years in Corporate Marketing for Xerox in Uxbridge. Since I’m very passionate about
the environment and tackling climate change, I decided to change careers and start my current
Master degree in Environmental Management and Policy and the University of Bristol. To extend my
experience further, I’m also volunteering for the local sustainability charity Vision21.

I’ve been always very passionate about sports and qualified as group exercise instructor in 2001
when I was 16 years old. For years, I taught classes such as step, dance aerobics, salsa aerobics, legs
bums & tums and back fit in a women’s only gym and for community groups in Germany. When
I moved to the UK and started my degree and marketing career in London, I sadly lost touch with
teaching classes. After qualifying for a UK instructor license and moving back to Cheltenham in
September however, I was determined to work as an exercise instructor again. Besides teaching
classes, I’m into running, swimming, skiing and tennis.

It has always been important for me to have a personal atmosphere and being able to focus on
people’s individual targets in my classes, hence why I’m really enjoying teaching classes for TWK.
Given that almost every adult suffers from back problems in their lives, I put a lot of emphasis on
the right posture, mobilising your back as well as equal focus on core and back exercises during my
fitball classes. And of course it has to be a hard workout meeting your own goals….. and lots of fun…
